Liverpool have dismissed head coach Arne Slot after two seasons in charge at Anfield, following a disappointing second campaign that saw the club finish fifth in the Premier League. The 47-year-old Dutchman had guided the Reds to their 20th league title in his debut season, but the team struggled in the following year.
Decision Made by Club Hierarchy
The decision to part ways with Slot was taken by Michael Edwards, FSG's chief executive, and Richard Hughes, Liverpool's sporting director. A club statement confirmed: "Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is underway. He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation."
Ownership's Statement of Appreciation
Liverpool's ownership released a joint statement expressing their gratitude for Slot's contributions. The statement read: "That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful."
It continued: "As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field. At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward."
The owners also highlighted the remarkable achievement of winning the league title in Slot's first season, as well as his leadership during a difficult period following the loss of Diogo. They added: "That accomplishment – made all the more remarkable as it arrived in his very first season in charge – was built on outstanding coaching and leadership every single day."
Slot's Legacy and Successor
Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool boss in 2024 after the German stepped down following nine years as manager. Despite the sacking, the club acknowledged that Slot's legacy remains intact. The statement concluded: "Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield."
Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who guided the Cherries to a sixth-place finish, is reportedly the favourite to replace Slot at Anfield. The search for a new head coach is now underway as Liverpool look to rebuild and return to the top of English football.
