Liverpool have finalized the acquisition of French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes in a deal worth up to £60 million. The 20-year-old defender passed his medical on Deadline Day in February and has now officially joined the Premier League champions.
Transfer details and contract length
The transfer, which was initially agreed in January, has been formalized with Jacquet signing a five-year contract that includes an option for a sixth season. Liverpool will pay a fixed fee of £55 million, with an additional £5 million in potential performance-related add-ons. The defender becomes Liverpool's second signing of the summer, following the €40 million acquisition of Osasuna winger Victor Munoz.
Jacquet's breakthrough season and injury
Jacquet enjoyed a breakout campaign in Ligue 1 last season before suffering a serious shoulder injury. Despite the setback, Liverpool moved quickly to secure his services, viewing him as a long-term investment to bolster their defensive options. His arrival comes after Ibrahima Konate departed the club on a free transfer to Real Madrid.
Player's reaction to the move
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Jacquet expressed his excitement about joining the club: "I feel really good, the first impressions are good, and I am very happy to start here. I am very happy. When I see the facilities, I can see myself there. I feel good here, and I am very excited to get started. For me it's a big dream, it's a big club. A club like Liverpool, it's a big dream for me."
Impact on Liverpool's squad
Jacquet will add depth to Liverpool's centre-back options, providing competition for Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah. The club's defensive line has been a priority for reinforcement following Konate's departure, and the young Frenchman is expected to be integrated gradually into the first team.
