Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman believes that Atletico Madrid possess enough quality to overcome Arsenal in their UEFA Champions League semifinal clash. The Spanish side hosts the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano today, with Lookman expected to play a pivotal role in Diego Simeone's tactical setup.
Full Confidence in Simeone
Expressing absolute trust in Simeone's ability to lead the red-and-white team to success, Lookman described the game against Arsenal as an emotional tie that brings him closer to his London roots. Pledging his loyalty to Atletico's quest for silverware, Lookman stated in an interview published by mundodeportivo.com: "Atletico is one of the best clubs in the world, with top players, an amazing team, and fantastic fans. It is a pleasure to play here. What is happening to us is fantastic, and I want to help the team."
He added: "The coach's confidence is great, helping the team, and the confidence of my teammates makes me more confident. That is what we have to do."
Respect for Arsenal
On the upcoming match, Lookman remarked: "They are tough opponents, a top team, and we have to be ready to fight. This is the Champions League semifinals, and there are no easy rivals at this stage. It will be a very tough match. Playing against Arsenal is emotional for me. I grew up in London, and my first club was Charlton Athletic. Being from London, this game is very special, but I want to win."
Lookman's Development Under Simeone
Lookman credited Simeone for his all-round improvement, saying the manager has helped him grow "in every way. My defense is better. I am more intense, work harder to recover, and I think I am a more complete player."
Since joining Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window, Lookman has contributed seven goals and four assists. While he may not be an automatic starter, the Nigerian international has experience in big European games. In 2024, Lookman scored a famous hat-trick for Atalanta in the Europa League final, leading the team to their first European trophy. He became the first player since Pierino Prati in 1969 to score a hat-trick in a one-legged European final. Now, he hopes to have a similar impact in the latter stages of the Champions League with Atletico.
