Father's Health Concerns Keep Him Away
Mounir Nasraoui, father of Spanish football star Lamine Yamal, has revealed why he chose not to travel to the United States to support his son at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. In an interview with the Spanish program Yahora Sonsoles, Nasraoui explained that his epilepsy and daily medication regimen made the high-pressure environment of the tournament too risky.
“I am an epileptic person. I have to take a lot of medication every day, and I can have epileptic seizures. I could even be here right now, under the effect of stress or emotion, and have a seizure without realising it,” Nasraoui said. He added that the decision was made carefully, considering not only his own health but also the well-being of his son and those around him.
Emotional Toll of Football Matches
Nasraoui emphasized that the emotional intensity of football matches could trigger a seizure. “That's why we always have to think things through carefully. Before travelling, we need to think about me, about him, and about all the people around us, you see? I might cause problems. So it's better to stay at home and watch all of that from here,” he stated.
His absence was notable as Yamal celebrated Spain's semi-final victory over France with other family members. The 17-year-old Barcelona winger has been instrumental in Spain's run to the final, where they will face Argentina and his idol Lionel Messi.
Yamal's Historic World Cup Campaign
Despite his father's absence, Yamal continues to shine. Spain's place in the final also fulfilled a personal dream for the teenager, who will get to share the pitch with Messi after Argentina defeated England to book their spot in the showpiece match, as noted by FIFA.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has also provided an update on Yamal's fitness after the player was spotted limping following the win over France. The manager dismissed injury concerns, confirming that Yamal will be fully fit and available for the final against Argentina.
