Minister David Umahi Speaks Out on Mary Habila's Death
Minister of Works David Umahi has publicly addressed the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila, whose body was discovered in a staff chalet at his residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State. Umahi rejected claims of a cover-up, stating that Habila was not a personal visitor but a government worker seconded from David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital to the Federal Ministry of Works. He confirmed that an autopsy has been ordered and that the family notified both the police and the hospital.
Details of the Incident
According to Umahi, Habila was found unresponsive after she failed to emerge from her room. Personnel broke open the door and found her dead. Medical staff attempted resuscitation before she was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Umahi challenged those alleging secrecy, asking, "So where is the secrecy that everybody was reporting? Where is the secrecy?"
Umahi Vows Legal Action
The minister criticized individuals using Habila's death to generate misleading content. He stated that lawyers have been briefed to pursue legal action against those distorting the facts. "When you use the death of people to curate content and deceive people, it means your time is up," Umahi said. He also confirmed directing an autopsy to determine the cause of death, emphasizing transparency.
Colleague's Account of Final Moments
A sworn affidavit from colleague Anita Baaki, filed before the Ebonyi State High Court, revealed that Habila was last seen alive on the evening of June 26 after showing off a new hairstyle. The following morning, staff forced open her locked room and found her unconscious on the floor near the door.
Police Investigation and Autopsy Demand
The Ebonyi State Police Command launched a criminal investigation after the 26-year-old nurse died at Umahi's residence on June 27, 2026. Police stated that Habila was part of the minister's medical team. Although the family initially refused an autopsy, the police insisted on a post-mortem examination as necessary for the investigation.
