Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim declared his team is only at the beginning of its development journey after the Red Devils fought back to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League thriller on Saturday.
Dramatic Finale at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
The match saw numerous twists and turns as United appeared destined for victory before Spurs mounted a stunning late comeback, only for the visitors to equalize in the dying moments. Bryan Mbeumo had given United the lead with a first-half header that looked like it might secure all three points for nearly an hour of play.
However, the game turned dramatically in the final stages when Mathys Tel equalized for Tottenham, followed by Richarlison heading home what seemed to be the winner in the 91st minute. United's situation worsened when they were reduced to ten men after Benjamin Sesko limped off, with Amorim having already made all five permitted substitutions.
De Ligt's Heroic Late Equalizer
Despite being a man down, United displayed remarkable resilience as Matthijs de Ligt powered in a towering header in the 96th minute to salvage a point for the visitors. The Dutch defender's late intervention extended United's unbeaten run in the Premier League to five games.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, De Ligt expressed mixed feelings about the result: "Luckily, we got a point, I think we deserved more the way we played. I'm proud of how the team fought back and got a point at a difficult stadium."
Amorim's Assessment and Future Outlook
United manager Ruben Amorim praised his team's fighting spirit but believed they should have secured victory after dominating the first half. "During the game you feel that the three points were there," said the Portuguese tactician. "If you look to the game and if you feel the environment, we have so much to grow as a team because today was our day to win this game."
Amorim specifically highlighted the need for more courage in decisive moments, stating: "If we have a little bit more bravery, we can kill this game." Despite the dropped points, the manager remains optimistic about United's progression during his longest unbeaten streak since taking charge at Old Trafford just over a year ago.
"I understand that this is just the tip of the iceberg," Amorim declared. "We are just in the beginning of becoming a very strong team, so we have a lot to do. We believe in our capacity to score goals until the last minute and we did that."
The draw leaves both teams on 18 points from 11 matches, with goal difference separating Spurs in third position from United in seventh place. The result continues United's frustrating record against Tottenham, having now failed to beat them in their previous eight meetings, including a 1-0 defeat in the Europa League final last May that saw Spurs qualify for the Champions League while United missed out on European football entirely.
