Napoli Owner Demands Drastic Football Reforms to Save the Sport
Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has issued a stark warning about the future of football, proposing radical changes he believes are necessary to prevent the sport from "dying." The 76-year-old film producer and businessman, whose club ended a 33-year wait to win Serie A in the 2022-23 season, fears that without innovation, football will fail to engage younger generations.
Current Context and Concerns
Napoli, the reigning Serie A champions, are poised to finish this campaign without a major trophy. They currently sit second in the league, nine points behind leaders Inter Milan with only six games remaining, and have been eliminated from both the Coppa Italia and the Champions League. De Laurentiis, speaking to The Athletic, expressed deep concerns that football's traditional format is becoming outdated and unappealing to modern audiences.
Proposal 1: Shorten Matches to 50 Minutes
De Laurentiis's first and most controversial suggestion is to reduce football matches from 90 minutes to just 50 minutes, split into two halves of 25 minutes each. He emphasizes that in-play time should be the priority, rather than relying on stoppage time at the end of each half. "No 1: I will reduce from 45 minutes each (half) to 25 minutes," he stated firmly. He also criticized players who waste time, declaring, "But also you cannot stay down on the field and play around like an actor! 'NO - you will go OUT!'"
Proposal 2: Eliminate Yellow and Red Cards
In a move inspired by rugby, De Laurentiis proposes scrapping the traditional yellow and red card system. Instead, he advocates for a sin-bin model where players are temporarily removed from the pitch. Under his plan, a yellow card offense would result in a five-minute expulsion, while a red card would lead to a 20-minute ban. "I will never use a red card and a yellow card. I would say 'YOU - get out for five minutes [for a yellow card]!' And 'YOU - get out for 20 minutes for a red card!'" he explained.
Proposal 3: Revise the Offside Rule
To make the game more exciting and goal-oriented, De Laurentiis calls for a significant overhaul of the offside rule. He believes that forwards should be given more leeway when through on goal, arguing that marginal offside calls stifle scoring opportunities. "Another thing!" he continued. "Too few goals! So it is not spectacular. You must make more goals. And to make more goals, you must change the rules. You cannot (cancel) a goal just for a few millimetres… the offside must be changed, a lot."
Urgent Call to Action for Future Generations
De Laurentiis concluded with a passionate plea, highlighting the importance of appealing to younger fans. "The new generation is our gold. If we don't please them, we will die. You will not have the same participation as you had in the last 100 years." His proposals aim to create a faster, more dynamic, and entertaining version of football that can captivate audiences in an era of short attention spans and digital distractions.
