Ndidi Addresses Osimhen's Touchline Reaction After Nigeria's 2-1 AFCON Win Over Tanzania
Ndidi on Osimhen's AFCON Touchline Drama

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has broken his silence on the touchline drama involving star striker Victor Osimhen during Nigeria's opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The incident occurred as Nigeria secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania's Taifa Stars at the Complexe Sportif de Fes in Morocco on Tuesday night, December 23.

Nigeria's Tense Victory in Fez

The three-time African champions began their AFCON 2025 campaign under significant pressure, following the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match against Tanzania proved to be a challenging encounter despite Nigeria's early dominance.

Nigeria eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute through defender Semi Ajayi, who powered a header home from Alex Iwobi's precise cross. However, the Taifa Stars shocked the Super Eagles with an equalizer in the 52nd minute, scored by Charles M'Mombwa.

The Nigerian response was swift. Just two minutes later, winger Ademola Lookman restored the lead with a magnificent solo effort, weaving past four defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Zuberi Foba. This goal proved to be the winner, placing Nigeria second in Group C after Tunisia's 3-1 victory over Uganda.

Osimhen's Frustration Boils Over

The match was a frustrating one for Napoli's former striker, Victor Osimhen, now of Galatasaray. The 26-year-old had several opportunities to score, including a clear chance in the 35th minute where he rounded the goalkeeper, only for his effort to be cleared off the line by Bakari Mwamnyeto.

His fortunes did not improve in the second half. Osimhen thought he had finally found the net from an Akor Adams assist, but the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review. With the striker unable to convert his chances, coach Eric Chelle made the decision to substitute him in the 86th minute, bringing on Paul Onuachu.

This substitution triggered a visible reaction from Osimhen on the touchline, showcasing his clear disappointment and frustration as he left the pitch.

Ndidi's Calming Words and Explanation

Speaking to the media after the match, captain Wilfred Ndidi addressed the incident involving his teammate. The Besiktas midfielder revealed he had not witnessed the reaction firsthand but offered an understanding perspective on Osimhen's emotions.

"I didn't see that but it is what it is, he is a big player, he wants to do the best for the team, maybe a bit frustrated," Ndidi stated via ESPN. He attributed the reaction to Osimhen's immense passion and the high expectations he places on himself, especially after the national team's recent World Cup qualifying failure.

Ndidi emphasized that Osimhen's desire to win and contribute is paramount. "It's normal, we are human beings... he feels like the game didn't go his way because he was trying for the team," he explained. The captain also confirmed he would have a personal conversation with the striker, describing him as a "great guy" who is vital to the team's success.

The incident highlights the immense pressure on the Super Eagles' key players as they navigate the AFCON tournament, carrying the hopes of a nation eager for redemption on the continental stage.
