The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly reached a definitive conclusion regarding the future of Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, following the team's campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Bronze Medal Finish Amidst Unmet Target
Under the guidance of French-Malian coach Eric Chelle, the Nigerian national team secured a historic bronze medal at the tournament. The Super Eagles clinched third place after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory against Egypt in Casablanca, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerging as the hero with two crucial saves.
However, this achievement fell short of the clear mandate given to Chelle upon his appointment in December 2025. His primary objective was to guide the three-time African champions to the final of the competition. Nigeria's dream was halted in the semi-finals by hosts Morocco, who won 4-2 on penalties after a tense 0-0 draw over 120 minutes.
Decision Made, Awaits NSC Approval
According to a senior NFF official who spoke to OwnGoalNigeria, a verdict on Chelle's tenure has already been made. "A decision has been made already and it will be forwarded to the National Sports Commission (NSC), who have been picking up the bills of his salary for the past one year," the source disclosed.
The official acknowledged that failing to reach the final was a significant blow but urged for a measured approach. "Not meeting the target of reaching the final is a huge blow, no doubt. But we must also consider the circumstances... Less emotion is needed because this is a very sensitive decision that could shape or destroy the future of our football," the source added.
Chelle's Uncertainty and Player Support
Coach Eric Chelle himself has expressed uncertainty about his position. Following the semi-final loss, he stated that the final call rests with the NFF leadership. "My future? Now I don't know. I'm the coach of Nigeria and maybe in a few days my president will tell me it's finished for you, or maybe you have to continue. So, I don't know," Chelle said.
In a show of support, Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has publicly appealed to the NFF to retain the coach. Ndidi argued that Chelle has brought much-needed stability to the team since taking over after Nigeria's poor run in the World Cup qualifiers.
With the AFCON concluded, the Nigerian football community now awaits the formal communication from the NFF and the National Sports Commission, which will determine whether Eric Chelle continues to lead the Super Eagles into the next phase of World Cup qualification and beyond.
