The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is embroiled in a fresh controversy, with reports indicating that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, and his technical crew are being owed several months' salaries. This financial dispute emerges at a critical juncture, just days after the announcement of a 54-man provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Unpaid Wages and World Cup Failure
According to sources, the Franco-Malian tactician is owed two months' salary by the football federation, which is led by Ibrahim Gusau. Chelle, who earns a reported monthly salary of $50,000, reportedly handled Nigeria's final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, including the crucial playoff against DR Congo, without receiving payment.
The 48-year-old coach was appointed with the primary mandate of securing a World Cup ticket for Nigeria. He took over the reins at a difficult period after Finidi George's resignation, with the team having managed only three points from their first four qualification games. Although Chelle oversaw a significant improvement—winning four matches and drawing two—Nigeria ultimately finished second in Group C behind South Africa and failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo on November 13.
Camp Tensions and AFCON Preparations
The salary issue is not an isolated incident of discord. Reports suggest that Chelle stayed away from the team in protest shortly before the decisive World Cup playoff, when players were allegedly holding out over unpaid bonuses. This financial instability casts a shadow over Nigeria's preparations for the 2025 AFCON, where the team seeks a fourth continental title.
Despite the challenges, Chelle met with the NFF Technical Committee on Monday, December 1, to finalize the expansive provisional list. He has outlined a strategy to blend experienced campaigners with emerging talents during the training camp. Initially set to open on December 8, FIFA has since extended the player release date for those based outside Africa to December 15.
Performance Under Chelle and Future Uncertainty
Under Chelle's leadership, the Super Eagles recorded their biggest victories, including a 4-1 win over Benin Republic and a 4-0 thrashing of Gabon. He also secured his first silverware by winning the 2025 Unity Cup in London after a 5-4 victory against Jamaica.
However, following the World Cup qualification failure, the NFF reportedly considered a change, with Augustine Eguavoen mentioned as a potential replacement. This move was reportedly resisted from various quarters, indicating internal divisions within the federation's leadership.
The ongoing salary dispute adds to a series of administrative and financial problems that have plagued Nigerian football. With the AFCON tournament approaching, resolving this impasse is crucial to ensure the Super Eagles can focus on the task of bringing glory to the nation, free from off-field distractions.
