Super Eagles Start AFCON 2025 with 2-1 Win Over Tanzania; Chelle Reacts
Nigeria Beat Tanzania 2-1 in AFCON 2025 Opener

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought victory, defeating the Taifa Stars of Tanzania 2-1 in their Group C opener at the Complexe du Sportif de Fes in Morocco.

Match Report: Ajayi and Lookman Fire Eagles to Victory

Nigeria took control of the match with a first-half goal from defender Semi Ajayi, who was later named the official Man of the Match. The lead was doubled after the break by forward Ademola Lookman, seemingly putting the game to bed.

However, a defensive lapse allowed Tanzania back into the contest. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali misjudged a situation, believing Charles M’Mbombwa to be offside, which allowed the Tanzanian to slot home and reduce the deficit. The Super Eagles had further chances to extend their lead, with Victor Osimhen having a goal disallowed, Akor Adams hitting the crossbar on his AFCON debut, and Samuel Chukwueze forcing a fine save.

The midfield engine was powered by Alex Iwobi, who provided assists for both Nigerian goals and was a creative force throughout, leading many fans to dispute the Man of the Match award.

Chelle's Cautious Reaction and Group Standings

Head coach Eric Chelle shared a measured analysis with CAF TV after the final whistle. "We have to analyse this win because in the first half we did a lot of good things, we created a lot of chances to score," he stated. "In the second half, we gave Tanzania the chance to come back into the game with two mistakes."

While satisfied with the three points, the Franco-Malian tactician acknowledged room for improvement. "The second part of the game shows clearly that there is still some work to be done, especially when it comes to killing the game," Chelle admitted. He emphasized that the key at AFCON is to "improve in every game."

When questioned about specific player performances, Chelle firmly defended his choices, reminding journalists, "I have my vision and I’m the coach."

What the Result Means for Group C

The victory places Nigeria second in Group C after the first round of matches. Tunisia leads the group following their 3-1 win over Uganda in Rabat. The Super Eagles' next challenge is a crucial top-of-the-table clash against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in Fez on December 27.

On the same day, the East African rivals Tanzania and Uganda, both seeking their first points, will face each other. The group stage results so far set up a fascinating battle for qualification to the knockout rounds.

Despite the win, the performance has sparked debate among Nigerian supporters, particularly regarding the official Man of the Match selection, with many believing Alex Iwobi's influential display was more deserving. The team will look to build on the positives and address the noted lapses as they prepare for the tougher test against Tunisia.
