NPFL Title and Relegation Battles Set for Dramatic Final Day Finish
The winner of the 2025/26 Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) season may not be determined until the final day, as teams at the top of the table exhibit inconsistent performances, creating a nail-biting climax to the campaign. The league has announced a break this weekend to accommodate the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Cup, adding to the suspense before the decisive matches.
Tight Race for the Championship
Enugu Rangers currently lead the standings with 59 points, holding a slender one-point advantage over second-placed Rivers United. In third place, Ikorodu City are tied with Abia Warriors on 55 points, while 3SC of Ibadan follow closely in fifth with 54 points. The competition is so intense that only three points separate Ikorodu City from seventh-placed Bendel Insurance, with just three matches remaining in the season.
While Rangers and Rivers United are favored for the title based on recent form, Ikorodu City and Abia Warriors remain strong contenders. However, the battle for a continental ticket, awarded to the third-placed team, is equally fierce. 3SC, Nasarawa United, and Bendel Insurance are hot on their heels, trailing by one, two, and three points respectively, threatening to disrupt the top-four aspirations.
Relegation Scrap Intensifies
The fight to avoid relegation is no less dramatic, with only three points separating Enyimba in 13th place (43 points) from bottom-placed Wikki Tourists (40 points). A cluster of clubs, including Niger Tornadoes, Kwara United, Remo Stars, and Warri Wolves, are also on 43 points, creating a precarious situation for survival. Kun Khalifat, Bayelsa United, and Wikki Tourists occupy the bottom three spots with 40 points each, making every remaining match critical.
The chances of survival for these troubled clubs will become clearer when the league resumes on May 3, setting the stage for a tense finale.
League Schedule and Management Insights
NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi confirmed that Week 36 and 37 games are scheduled for May 3 and 10, respectively, with another President’s Federation Cup window observed on May 16/17. In a statement, Owumi explained, "We synergised with the NFF Competitions Department at the start of the season to create windows for the Federation Cup. It has been in effect since January, and we are running our calendar as designed."
He added that the final matches of the season will be played on May 24, as planned during the season's draw. "We have been intentional to maintain fixture fidelity, and it took a lot of planning and cooperation from the clubs to achieve this," Owumi noted, highlighting the efforts to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted league operation compared to past disruptions.
As the season approaches its climax, fans can expect high-stakes drama in both the title chase and the relegation dogfight, with everything likely to be decided on the last day.
