Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is reportedly on the verge of completing a lucrative move to Tanzanian Premier League giants Simba SC, with the 22-time champions emerging as frontrunners for his signature.
Nwabali Attracts Interest from Top Clubs
The Nigerian shot-stopper has been a target for several elite clubs across Africa and Saudi Arabia since terminating his contract with Chippa United in February 2026. According to East African football agent Edgah Mitemah, Simba SC have placed Nwabali on their radar as they aim to bolster their goalkeeping department for the upcoming season.
“Yes, I am aware Simba are looking to sign a goalkeeper, and Nwabali is one of those who has come on their radar at the moment,” Mitemah told Footy Africa. He added that the goalkeeper’s free-agent status simplifies negotiations, and a substantial signing-on fee could persuade him to join.
“He is a free agent, so it will be easier for Simba to sign him, and I believe the signing-on fee they may offer could tempt him to join,” Mitemah said.
Competition from Kaizer Chiefs and Azam FC
The race for Nwabali’s signature is not limited to Tanzania. South African powerhouses Kaizer Chiefs have maintained long-term interest in the 29-year-old, while Azam FC are also monitoring the situation. Mitemah noted, “There are other clubs like Azam FC who might rival Simba for the goalkeeper, while I am also aware of Kaizer Chiefs’ admiration for him.” Despite the competition, Simba SC are reportedly confident that their financial package and sporting project give them an edge.
AFCON Heroics Boost Nwabali’s Profile
Nwabali has been without a club since leaving Chippa United after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where he played a key role in Nigeria’s third-place finish. His performances during the tournament significantly enhanced his reputation, making him one of Africa’s most sought-after goalkeepers.
Before his departure from Chippa United, there were expectations of a move to Saudi Arabia or a top South African club, but no deal materialized in the January transfer window. Since then, Nwabali has been training individually under former Super Eagles goalkeeper Greg Etafia to maintain fitness and sharpness.
Eric Chelle Receives Warning on Nwabali
In related news, former Super Eagles midfielder Duke Udi has cautioned head coach Eric Chelle about his selection criteria, specifically regarding Nwabali’s lack of club football. Udi expressed concern that the goalkeeper’s inactivity could affect his form, urging Chelle to consider all options for the national team.
