Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang, an English-French-Nigerian professional rugby player who won a gold medal with France at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has expressed his desire to inspire the next generation of Nigerian rugby players. In an exclusive interview with the Guardian Nigeria, he shared his thoughts on his first visit to Nigeria, his triple cultural identity, and his plans for the sport's growth in the country.
First Visit to Nigeria
Grandidier-Nkanang described his visit as deeply meaningful, noting that he recently understood the importance of his multiple cultures—English, French, and Nigerian. He recalled being invited to a presidential state dinner when President Bola Tinubu visited the Elysée, which made him realize his Nigerian roots and the need to explore them.
Navigating Triple Identity
Regarding his triple identity, he explained that while he is French on paper and grew up in London, making him feel most British, France provided him with the greatest professional opportunities. He carries both a French and Nigerian name and resonates with both worlds, but now fully embraces his Nigerian heritage.
Olympic Gold and Rugby Influence
Winning the Olympic gold medal was the biggest achievement of his life. He believes the medal legitimizes his message of success, determination, and drive, which he hopes will inspire young Nigerians to take up rugby.
Early Rugby Journey
Grandidier-Nkanang started rugby in secondary school, initially struggling with the sport. He quit for a few years but returned because his friends were playing. A coach's belief in his potential motivated him to pursue rugby professionally. Despite playing basketball, athletics, and gymnastics, he chose rugby, dedicating himself to training and nutrition.
Untapped Talent in Nigeria
He emphasized Nigeria's huge athletic potential, noting that many diaspora athletes have succeeded. Rugby, he said, requires respect, camaraderie, discipline, and determination—traits natural to Nigerians. The sport combines speed, power, agility, and mental strength, making it ideal for Nigerian athletes.
Collaboration with Nigerian Rugby
Grandidier-Nkanang has already collaborated with the Nigerian Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), conducting clinics at the Rugby School in Victoria Island and in Surulere with over 200 children. He also attended a rugby sevens tournament organized by the federation, bringing his gold medal to inspire young participants.
Other Interests: DJing and Product Design
Aside from rugby, he is a DJ and studied product design. Music has been a significant part of his life, providing an escape during injuries. He believes in diversifying interests, and while he may not return to product design after retirement, he plans to stay involved in sports.
Future Plans
His future goals include defending his Olympic gold medal and fostering the relationship with Nigeria to grow rugby significantly. He acknowledged the need for funding and infrastructure, praising NRFF Manager Azeez Ladipo for his efforts and calling for government and community support.
Enjoying Nigerian Culture
Grandidier-Nkanang has been overwhelmed by the love and warmth he received in Nigeria. He has learned to cook traditional dishes like jollof rice, egusi, ogbono, and pounded yam, and plans to continue cooking them in France. The positive energy from the kids at the clinic made him feel special and grateful.
