Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has issued a heartfelt apology to the Nigerian people for the national team's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The forward, now leading the charge at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, has vowed to use the tournament to make amends.
A Public Apology and a Promise
In an interview, Osimhen expressed deep regret for the disappointment caused by the World Cup qualification failure. The Super Eagles missed their chance after a playoff loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo's Leopards. This marks the second consecutive World Cup Nigeria will miss, heightening the sense of letdown among fans.
"We are so sorry," Osimhen stated. "We have to use this opportunity to say we're sorry for not getting them the World Cup ticket. I know the disappointment on the faces of many Nigerians." He positioned the upcoming AFCON, which begins just a month after the World Cup playoff, as the team's chance for redemption.
"Going to War" in Morocco
Osimhen, who currently plays for Turkish club Galatasaray, declared that the Super Eagles are ready for battle in Morocco. He emphasized that the team is not underestimating any opponent but believes they are among the favourites to lift the trophy.
"It's all about going to war," he said in a separate discussion. "Tuesday is the first one, and we will give everything... I think we're up there with so many favourites in this tournament." The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has also stated its aim is to secure all three points in their opening match.
The Road to Redemption Begins
Nigeria's first test at AFCON 2025 is against Tanzania's Taifa Stars at the Complexe Sportif de Fes on Tuesday. Historically, Nigeria has faced Tanzania once before in the tournament, securing a 3-1 victory in the 1980 edition, which Nigeria went on to win for their first-ever AFCON title.
Osimhen, widely regarded as one of Africa's best strikers, is seen as a key contender for the tournament's Golden Boot award. His form will be crucial if Nigeria is to navigate a challenging tournament and fulfil Osimhen's promise to "fight for every ball" and ultimately win the tournament to appease their supporters.
"Life has happened and we have to keep it moving," Osimhen concluded. "This AFCON is an opportunity to do well and to make sure that we win the tournament." The nation now watches, hoping their star man can lead the Super Eagles to glory and heal the wounds of a missed World Cup.
