Senegalese midfielder Pape Gueye has announced his decision to step aside from the national team following Senegal's embarrassing elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Gueye, who scored the winning goal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, set a condition for his return: the departure of the current coaching staff led by Pape Thiaw.
World Cup Exit Details
Senegal led Belgium 2-0 until the 86th minute, but goals from Romelu Lukaku and Leandro Trossard forced extra time. Youri Tielemans then converted a penalty in the 125th minute to complete a stunning turnaround and eliminate the Teranga Lions. Senegal's tournament had been rocky; they lost their first two games to France and Norway before a 5-0 win over Iraq secured knockout stage qualification.
Gueye's Statement
Gueye took to Instagram after the defeat to announce his break from the national team, linking his return to the removal of Pape Thiaw and his staff. “I will come back to say a few words about the elimination, but I am announcing today that as long as this coaching staff is in place, I am taking a break from the national team,” he wrote.
Coach's Contract and Issues
According to Seneweb, Pape Thiaw was owed salaries and had no official contract heading into the World Cup. During a pre-match press conference, Thiaw acknowledged the issues but said they were resolved. “Yes, there have been some issues, but whether it's the players, the coaching staff, or the federation, everyone is now focused on tomorrow's match; that's the most important thing,” he said via ESPN. He added, “Yes, it took longer than it should, but the only thing I want to make clear is that it was never about money; it was a matter of principle and respect. My contract is confidential; it's not up to me to disclose the details of what's in it.”
Team Discord and Accommodation Problems
The statement reveals cracks within the Senegalese camp. Additionally, the team reportedly faced issues with their accommodation, describing the booked apartment as substandard. CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe had earlier written a letter to the team, acknowledging them as one of Africa's best and wishing them well for the tournament.
