Poland Confident of Victory as 18 Eagles Begin Training in Warsaw
Poland Confident Ahead of Nigeria Friendly in Warsaw

Poland winger Jakub Kaminski has expressed confidence that his team will defeat the Super Eagles in their upcoming international friendly, despite a recent 2-0 loss to Ukraine. Speaking after the defeat, Kaminski noted that many Polish players were meeting for the first time, which affected their performance. He believes that with more time together on the pitch, Poland will be ready for Nigeria.

Kaminski Optimistic About Poland's Chances

According to Sportowefakty, Kaminski said: "It's obvious that some of us were playing together for the first time, and it's normal that sometimes there was a lack of automaticity. We still have the match against Nigeria, and we'll definitely improve the elements that weren't working today." Both teams failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and are in a rebuilding phase.

Iwobo Commits to Super Eagles

Meanwhile, Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has declared his readiness for the matches against Poland and Portugal. Iwobi, who recently recovered from an injury sustained in April, is a welcome addition amid several withdrawals. Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Femi Azeez, Samson Tijani, Alhassan Yusuf, and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro have all pulled out for various reasons.

Speaking on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast, the Fulham star said: "The 2025-26 season has wrapped up, a season of ups and downs. Of course, we wanted to secure a European spot, but it wasn't meant to be. Nonetheless, we've got to be proud of what we achieved and how far Fulham has come as a club."

Training Underway in Warsaw

Captain Wilfred Ndidi led 15 other players in the first training session in Warsaw. The friendly will take place at the 58,000-capacity Stadion PGE Narodowy, marking only the second meeting between the two senior teams. In 2018, Nigeria defeated Poland 1-0 in Wroclaw, with Victor Moses scoring the winner.

Both teams missed out on the 2026 World Cup. Poland lost to Sweden in the Euro playoff final, while Nigeria fell to DR Congo in the African playoff final after defeating Gabon.

Players present at the team hotel included Ndidi, goalkeepers Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho, and Arthur Okonkwo; defenders Bruno Onyemaechi, Zaidu Sanusi, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Igoh Ogbu; midfielders Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, and Tochukwu Nnadi; and forwards Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, Jerome Akor Adams, Terem Moffi, and Rafiu Durosinmi. Semi Ajayi, whose Hull City won promotion to the Premier League, arrived later, as did fresh invitee Abdullahi Bewene. Neither trained with the squad on the first day.

Coach Chelle's Winning Mentality

Coach Eric Chelle, fresh from leading the Eagles to retain the Unity Cup in London, is optimistic. "There is a culture of winning that we are trying to build in this team, and that mentality is important. You can say that it is difficult to have games at this time because the players have been in holiday mode for about two weeks, but the job must be done. We have 18 players in camp now, and we will work with that. Everybody must work hard, and we will go into the match with the determination to win."

The team trained for 80 minutes under light rain at the Stadion Polinii Warsawa. The official training session will be held at the match venue on the eve of the game.
