Ghana Police Launch Intensive Manhunt Following Deadly Football Team Bus Ambush
The Ghana Police Service has initiated a comprehensive manhunt for six armed robbers responsible for a violent highway attack that claimed the life of promising young footballer Dominic Frimpong. The tragic incident occurred when Berekum Chelsea's team bus was ambushed while returning from a league match, sending shockwaves through the Ghanaian football community and raising urgent questions about security for traveling sports teams.
Details of the Fatal Highway Attack
According to official police statements, the attack unfolded along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District at approximately 10:30 pm on Sunday, April 12, 2026. The team bus, carrying approximately thirty players and officials, was intercepted by six armed men, three of whom were reportedly carrying pump-action guns. The attackers blocked the roadway, forcing the driver to attempt an escape maneuver that resulted in the bus skidding into nearby bushes.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed that during the chaotic confrontation, gunshots were fired as players and officials fled into surrounding bush paths to save their lives. Police investigators recovered two spent BB cartridges at the scene, evidence that is now central to their ongoing investigation into the deadly incident.
Tragic Loss of a Rising Football Talent
The attack proved fatal for 20-year-old Dominic Frimpong, a talented winger who had been building momentum since joining Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana during the January transfer window. Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound to the head during the ambush and was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital, where he tragically died while receiving medical treatment.
"During the attack, Dominic Frimpong, a footballer, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but unfortunately passed away while receiving treatment," police officials stated in their official update on the incident.
Frimpong had made thirteen league appearances and scored two goals for Berekum Chelsea, showing clear signs of developing into one of the Ghana Premier League's most promising young talents before his life was brutally cut short. Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, was reportedly robbed of GHS 4,500 during the same incident, further confirming the criminal nature of the ambush.
