Brazilian football legend Romario has launched a scathing attack on Carlo Ancelotti, demanding the Italian coach be sacked immediately after Brazil were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup by Norway in the Round of 16. Erling Haaland scored twice to lead Norway past Brazil, with Neymar's late penalty not enough to rescue the five-time champions, extending Brazil's long wait for a sixth World Cup title since 2002.
Romario's Fierce Criticism
Speaking on his show Romario TV, the 1994 World Cup winner left no room for ambiguity. “He cannot continue as Brazil's head coach, there is absolutely no reason. If I were in charge of the CBF, I would have gone into the locker room, told him to get lost, and I would have torn up his contract on the spot,” Romario said. “The match against Norway was a disgrace. I'd even go so far as to drag him to court. We'll see what happens next, but he cannot stay.”
Ancelotti Refuses to Walk Away
Despite the backlash, Ancelotti has signalled his intention to remain as Brazil's head coach. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has also backed him to continue, according to Reuters. Ancelotti's contract runs until after the 2026 World Cup, but the early exit has intensified pressure on the former Real Madrid manager.
Penalty Controversy
Legit.ng previously reported that Ancelotti explained why Bruno Guimaraes took Brazil's penalty against Norway ahead of Vinicius Jr. The manager confirmed that the Newcastle United midfielder is one of the best penalty takers in the squad, despite his miss costing the team a chance to equalise.
Brazil's elimination marks another early exit for the Selecao, who have not won the World Cup since 2002. The defeat to Norway, led by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, has sparked widespread criticism of Ancelotti's tactics and selection.
