The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has commended Cape Verde for their impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following their elimination in the Round of 32 after a hard-fought 3-2 loss to defending champions Argentina.
Cape Verde's Debut Campaign
Cape Verde made their World Cup debut with a series of strong results, holding Spain to a 0-0 draw, drawing 2-2 with Uruguay, and securing another draw against Saudi Arabia. The Blue Sharks entered the knockout stage as underdogs against Argentina but took the game to the champions, defying expectations.
The Match Against Argentina
Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Argentina in the first half. Cape Verde responded through Deroy Duarte, who equalized in the second half. Lisandro Martinez then put Argentina ahead again, but Sidny Lopes Cabral scored a spectacular goal to level the match and force extra time. In extra time, an own goal by Diney Borges decided the contest, sending Argentina through to the Round of 16.
CAF's Official Statement
CAF published a statement on its official X page, applauding Cape Verde's spirited performance despite their elimination. The post read: "You showed the world who Cape Verde really is. Thank you for everything. Forever proud."
Next for Argentina and Cape Verde
Argentina will face Egypt in the Round of 16 after the Pharaohs defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties in their Round of 32 match. Cape Verde, meanwhile, return home with pride after a memorable debut campaign that included notable results against Spain, Uruguay, and a near-upset of the world champions.
