South Africa captain and goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, has called for unity among football fans across Africa and the world, urging them to set aside political differences and focus on the spirit of the game. The appeal comes amid a surge of online attacks targeting South Africa during the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
Disappointing Start for South Africa
South Africa's World Cup campaign began poorly with a 2-0 loss to Mexico in their opening match, compounded by two red cards that left them with nine men. The defeat quickly became a trending topic on social media, with many African nations using the opportunity to criticize South Africa.
Resentment Over Xenophobic Attacks
The negative reactions stem from lingering resentment over repeated xenophobic attacks in South Africa that have targeted migrants from other African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana. Those incidents sparked widespread condemnation across the continent and forced many affected migrants to flee their homes and return to their countries of origin.
Call for Unity
Ahead of their next match against Czechia, Ronwen Williams emphasized that Africans are one people and should not allow political issues to divide them. The Bafana Bafana skipper stressed the importance of celebrating football, promoting respect, and supporting one another. He urged fans to leave politics to politicians and focus on the beautiful game.
