Simeone Praises Lookman Despite Miss vs Arsenal

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has praised Ademola Lookman's overall performance against Arsenal, despite the Super Eagles forward missing a golden opportunity to win the match.

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Viktor Gyokeres opened the scoring for Arsenal from the penalty spot in the first half, while Julian Alvarez equalised for Atletico, also from the spot, after the break.

Lookman Overcomes Injury to Play Full Match

Ademola Lookman passed a late fitness test to start the game, having been sidelined since the Copa del Rey final loss to Real Sociedad. Despite Simeone's pre-match admission that the forward was still in discomfort, Lookman surprisingly completed the full 90 minutes, exceeding his usual 60-minute limit.

In the 75th minute, with the score level at 1-1, Lookman spurned a glorious chance to give Atletico the lead. He fired a left-footed shot straight at Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, wasting a clear opening.

Simeone Highlights Defensive Contribution

Speaking after the match, Simeone focused on the positive aspects of Lookman's display. "I loved Lookman's game; we're getting an important player to understand that his defensive work helps us," the Argentine coach said, as quoted by Marca. Simeone has consistently urged Lookman to improve his defensive contributions since his arrival at the club.

Simeone also rejected suggestions that Atletico were fortunate to escape with a draw. He insisted his side were the better team in key moments and could have won the match. "I don't believe in luck, I believe in decisiveness. The first half was even, maybe they were better with the ball but didn't create many chances," he said, as quoted by Into the Calderon.

"They have a very strong squad, their substitutes came on and were better than the starters. Even so, in the second half we were better than them. They dropped their intensity and we improved our organisation. We were better at the back and created chances through Griezmann and Lookman."

Second Leg Awaits at the Emirates

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal remain confident of progressing to the final when the second leg takes place at the Emirates Stadium, where they will have the backing of their home supporters. The tie is finely poised, with both teams seeking their first-ever Champions League title.

Earlier in the game, a controversial penalty decision was overturned by VAR after David Hancko fouled Eberechi Eze in the box. Referee Daniel Makkelie initially pointed to the spot but, following a lengthy review, reversed his decision due to insufficient contact.
