Super Eagles New Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo Loses Starting Spot at Wrexham
Super Eagles Goalie Okonkwo Dropped at Wrexham

Super Eagles new goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has lost his starting berth at EFL Championship club Wrexham, a development that poses a significant concern for head coach Eric Chelle. FIFA recently approved Okonkwo's switch from representing England to Nigeria, providing Chelle with an additional option to strengthen his goalkeeping department.

Okonkwo's Dip in Form

Okonkwo has been an unused substitute for three consecutive league matches as Wrexham pushes for a playoff spot. His last appearance came in a 2-0 loss to Birmingham City, after which he was dropped following a run of three matches without a win, during which he conceded nine goals. Head coach Phil Parkinson has opted for the experience of former Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward, who had initially lost his place to Okonkwo due to injury.

According to Transfermarkt, this is the first time Okonkwo has been benched for three straight games since the opening matches of the season. Prior to this, he had started 39 consecutive matches, keeping 10 clean sheets but conceding 53 goals. Only five teams, two of which were relegated, have conceded more than Wrexham this season.

Parkinson's Decision

Parkinson explained his decision to drop Okonkwo, stating: "Wardy was very unlucky at the start of the season when he got an injury that took a long time to get right. Arthur came in and produced so many moments to win us points, but I felt the time was right to take him out of the team. He has played a lot of minutes in a new division. Wardy deserved the opportunity. He gave us a really experienced performance when we needed it."

Wrexham must finish sixth in the Championship table with one match remaining to secure a playoff spot and a potential promotion to the Premier League next season.

Impact on Super Eagles

This setback is troubling for Eric Chelle, who views Okonkwo as a viable addition to the squad ahead of crucial matches. Okonkwo will compete with free agent and former number one Stanley Nwabali, as well as Udinese shotstopper Maduka Okoye. The Super Eagles have four matches scheduled in May and June, including the Unity Cup in London and high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal.

Former Super Eagles midfielder Duke Udi has warned Chelle not to invite Nwabali until he finds a new club, as the goalkeeper left Chippa United after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations without securing another offer, raising concerns among Nigerian football fans.
