Football is often a deeply patriotic sport. So it raised eyebrows when Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan chose Didier Drogba, an Ivorian, as her country's ambassador for the AFCON 2027 tournament. A global football icon and a continent-wide tournament make a winning combination. But for those familiar with Drogba's story, the symbolism runs deeper.
Drogba's Historic Role in Ivory Coast
In 2005, Ivory Coast stood on the brink of renewed civil war. Years of conflict had left the country shattered. Against this tense backdrop, Drogba and his teammates secured qualification for the 2006 World Cup. A camera captured Drogba addressing the nation: "From the north, south, centre, and west, we proved today that all Ivorians can coexist and play together with a shared aim." He and his teammates knelt, urging the country to lay down weapons and hold elections. While this did not single-handedly end the war, both sides returned to negotiations and a ceasefire followed. Football had given the country hope.
Why Tanzania Chose Drogba
That ability to rise above differences is why Tanzania's choice is deliberate. AFCON 2027 is more than a tournament. Tanzania has faced challenges. Violence surrounding the October 2025 elections left 518 dead and strained government-people relations. The Commission of Inquiry, set up by President Samia, gathered 63,000 testimonials. It revealed how disaffected youths were recruited and exploited. Young people were housed in training camps and offered up to 50,000 Tanzanian shillings to attack police stations and voting booths. These attacks tapped into frustration and alienation.
Football as an Alternative
Football offers an alternative: teamwork, aspiration, and belonging. Sport has long been recognized for supporting youth at risk of radicalisation. After talks with President Samia, Drogba said, "The sports sector is an important resource for social development. It has the potential to support young people and strengthen society." He aims to develop football academies and youth programmes across the country.
Healing the Nation
President Samia spoke of a "journey of healing the wounds of the nation," stressing that over 126 tribes stand together. Hosting AFCON offers a shared national project, collective pride, and a stage to present Tanzania to the world. The tournament also helps mend relationships with other African nations, shaken by the violence. Co-hosting with Kenya and Uganda projects regional unity. Kenyan President William Ruto visited Tanzania, saying, "Our destiny is tied together, our future is one." He commended President Samia for the Commission of Inquiry and its report.
Regional Cooperation
Bilateral trade between Tanzania and Kenya reached $860.3 million in 2025, accounting for 40% of intra-East African Community commerce. A $2.5 billion standard gauge railway linking Dar es Salaam to Kigali is advancing, lowering transport costs and creating opportunities. The joint hosting of AFCON 2027 projects an image of cooperative East Africa.
Didier Drogba once gave a divided nation hope. Inviting him signals Tanzania's understanding of reconciliation. The wounds of October 2025 will not be healed by a tournament. But a country that comes together around joy, pride, and possibility is already healing. Football is a universal language, and Tanzania is learning to speak it fluently.
