Gamondi, Salum Confident as Tanzania Dare Super Eagles in AFCON Opener
Tanzania's Gamondi, Salum upbeat ahead of Nigeria clash

The stage is set for a classic David versus Goliath encounter as the Super Eagles of Nigeria begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Tanzania's Taifa Stars today. Despite the massive gulf in FIFA rankings and pedigree, the East Africans, led by coach Miguel Gamondi and midfielder Faisal Salum, have promised a fierce battle, warning Nigeria against any form of underestimation.

Underdogs with a Bold Belief

The Group C opening match is scheduled for 6.00 p.m. today at the 35,000-capacity Complexe Sportif de Fès. On paper, it appears a mismatch: Nigeria sits as the 32nd-best team in the world, while Tanzania is positioned at 131st. However, the Tanzanian camp has dismissed the relevance of these numbers once the whistle blows.

Coach Miguel Gamondi acknowledged the formidable attacking quality of the 2013 AFCON champions but insisted his team would not be cowed by reputation. He emphasized that the Taifa Stars must deliver a flawless performance to stand a chance.

"You don't need to introduce the attacking force of Nigeria. When you see the quality of their players, you need to give more than 100 per cent," Gamondi stated. "The smallest mistake against this kind of team can punish you."

Tactical Discipline and CHAN Spirit as Weapons

Gamondi revealed that his game plan hinges on structural organization and tactical discipline, not mere defensive parking. "The key for us is the shape, the tactical discipline, the structure and the organisation," he explained. "We are not here only to defend. Our mentality is not only to defend. We want to recover the ball and try to attack as well. We are coming here to compete with our guts."

This fighting spirit is fueled by their recent experience at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), where they reached the quarterfinals before losing to eventual winners, Morocco. Midfielder Faisal Salum, a standout performer for the team and a player for Azam FC, believes that campaign built an unshakeable belief within the squad.

"Everyone is really motivated after what we did in CHAN. Those were very tough games and almost the same as an AFCON," Salum said. "This will definitely be tougher because we are competing against the best players in Africa from across the world. But, we have built on some incredible belief and fighting spirit."

A Cohesive Unit Primed for an Upset

The Tanzania squad, predominantly composed of locally-based players, has benefited from strong cohesion and a preparatory camp in Egypt. Salum confirmed the team's readiness, noting that the camp helped raise their standards.

With the primary target being a historic round of 16 berth, Salum says the lessons from past tournaments, including their previous AFCON outing, have been well learned. "We have learnt a lot, especially from Cote d'Ivoire last time out. We need to give 100 per cent in every game; there is very little room for mistakes, and you must play with the highest standards of discipline," he added.

He expressed confidence in the team's blend of a strong playing unit and the experience of Coach Gamondi, viewing them as the right ingredients to spring a surprise. As the Taifa Stars prepare to dare the Super Eagles, they carry not just hope, but a concrete plan and a hardened belief that they can defy the odds in Fès.
