Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal worth up to £100 million ($133 million) to sign midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, according to ESPN. The agreement comes just a day after Spurs secured an £85 million deal for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, marking the second time in days the club has broken its transfer record.
Deal Structure and Personal Terms
The transfer comprises an initial £92.5 million fee plus an additional £7.5 million in add-ons tied to European qualification. Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle, as the Italy international has already indicated openness to moving to north London. Tottenham's previous club-record signing was Dominic Solanke, who joined from Bournemouth for £65 million in 2024.
Spurs' Busy Transfer Window
Tottenham have been active in the January transfer window, having already signed four new players: Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, along with free transfers of Martin Dúbravka, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson. Additionally, the club agreed a £50 million deal to allow Luka Vuskovic to join Brighton. The Tonali deal underscores Tottenham's aggressive approach to strengthening the squad under manager Ange Postecoglou.
Impact on Newcastle
Newcastle United, who signed Tonali from AC Milan in 2023 for a reported £55 million, will recoup a significant profit on the midfielder. The sale could provide funds for the Magpies to reinvest in their own squad as they aim to maintain their position in the Premier League's top half.
