Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has been appointed as one of the draw assistants for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification draw. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed on Tuesday that the defender will join Max-Alain Gradel, Essam El Hadary, and Trésor Mputu in conducting the draw.
“African legends on draw duty,” CAF wrote in a statement. “Meet tomorrow’s AFCON 2027 Qualifiers Draw assistants: Max-Alain Gradel, William Troost-Ekong, Essam El Hadary, and Trésor Mputu.”
The draw, which will determine Nigeria’s qualification pathway for the tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will feature 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the finals.
The 2027 edition marks AFCON’s return to East Africa for the first time since 1976. Troost-Ekong, a key figure in Nigeria’s defense, expressed pride in being part of the event.
“It is an honor to contribute to the draw for such a prestigious tournament,” said Troost-Ekong. “I look forward to seeing the groups formed and the excitement that lies ahead for African football.”
The qualification matches are expected to begin later this year, with Nigeria aiming to secure a spot in the expanded 24-team finals.
