Van Dijk's Frank Assessment: 'We Are a Mess'
Team captain Virgil van Dijk did not mince words in the aftermath, delivering a brutally honest assessment of the team's predicament. The Dutch defender stated that the players are failing both themselves and their manager, Arne Slot.
"We are definitely letting him down but we've let ourselves down as well," Van Dijk confessed. "You look at yourself first and then you help each other get out of this mess because at the moment it is a mess – that's just a fact. As the champions we can't be in the situation we are in right now."
He called for collective responsibility and a resilient mentality to navigate the severe downturn in form, emphasizing the need for the squad to stick together rather than point fingers.

The scale of Liverpool's decline is staggering, especially considering the club's record investment of nearly £450 million ($590 million) in the summer transfer window. None of the high-profile signings have made a positive impact.
Alexander Isak, the British record signing at £125 million, is yet to score a league goal and delivered another anonymous performance before being substituted after 68 minutes. Fellow big-money acquisition Florian Wirtz has been similarly ineffective. The problems run deeper than the new faces, however, with established stars like Ibrahima Konaté also suffering a dramatic loss of form.
Manager Slot Accepts Full Responsibility
Under intense scrutiny, manager Arne Slot shouldered the blame for the team's joint-worst Premier League home defeat. The loss, courtesy of goals from Murillo, Nicolo Savona, and Morgan Gibbs-White, was Liverpool's heaviest at Anfield since 2021.
"I want to emphasise I am responsible for the current losses," Slot stated. "I can never come up with excuses for us to have the results we have. That is far from good enough and I am responsible for that."
Despite the dismal result, Slot pointed to a promising first-half performance where his team created numerous chances but lacked the cutting edge to score, a recurring issue this season. He remains adamant that the quality within the squad will eventually see them emerge from this dire run of form, which now stands at eight defeats in their last eleven matches across all competitions.
The defeat leaves Liverpool in 11th place in the Premier League, a staggering eight points behind leaders Arsenal, effectively ending their title defence well before the Christmas period. The team now turns its attention to the UEFA Champions League, where their form has been markedly better, hoping for a reprieve against PSV Eindhoven.
