Bebe Jewelry: TikTok Fundraiser to Repatriate Body Divides Nigerians

Nigerians are divided over a TikTok fundraiser launched to help repatriate the body of late businesswoman Blessing Orji, popularly known as Bebe Jewelry, who died in China. Orji, a trader, reportedly slumped while resting at a store in China, and a video capturing the incident began circulating online days before the fundraiser emerged.

On Thursday, 20 August 2026, a TikTok user identified as Amilord Fashion World shared a post soliciting financial contributions to help cover the cost of bringing the businesswoman's remains back to Nigeria. The post included a business account number and a phone number, with the user expressing gratitude in advance to anyone willing to donate towards the family's expenses.

Bebe Jewelry continued to trend after her demise in China while shopping. The video of the incident, which circulated online, showed her slumping while at a store, and the fundraiser emerged days after the video went viral.

Nigerians Question the Legitimacy of the Fundraiser

While some social media users showed sympathy, many others raised concerns about the legitimacy of the appeal. Several commenters argued that a fundraiser of this nature should come directly from the family or from a recognised traders' association, not from a third-party posting account details online.

@Amy Love wrote: "allow the family do this officially Una too do." Another user, Officialvee_5, questioned whether the family was even aware of the donation drive and why a personal phone number was included.

Lilian Lewy raised the alarm about multiple platforms running similar collections, writing: "How many platforms are doing this contribution..is best this things is done properly well..if possible...by the family or the traders associations..."

Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users

Not everyone was critical, however. SLAY WITH IZZY GRACE pushed back against the sceptics, writing: "una, too dey ask questions if u want support support."

One commenter who identified as a family member also weighed in. @Wendy's Bakerite wrote: "Rest on Aunty we the Orjis family is really in deep pain."
