Vozinha Opens Up About Emotional Outburst
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has explained the emotions behind his tears following his team's historic 0-0 draw against Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match, held on Monday, June 15, at Atlanta Stadium, saw the debutants hold the European champions to a stalemate in Group H.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper delivered a man-of-the-match performance, making crucial saves to deny Spain's attack, including efforts from Ferran Torres, Pedri, and Lamine Yamal. His heroics ensured Cape Verde secured their first-ever point in a World Cup tournament.
Personal Reasons Behind the Tears
Speaking after the game, Vozinha revealed that his tears were not just about the result but also deeply personal. He said the absence of his mother, who could not attend due to visa complications, and the loss of his grandparents, who raised him, weighed heavily on his heart.
“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents and unfortunately, they were not here; they died a few years ago,” Vozinha shared. “They were everything for me, for my life. I also cried because my mum didn’t manage to be here because of the visa.”
He explained that the visa application process for Cape Verdean citizens is often complicated and time-consuming, and despite efforts, his mother could not secure the necessary documents in time.
A Dream Realized
Vozinha emphasized that his performance against Spain was the result of years of hard work and perseverance. He nearly quit football before the World Cup but continued chasing his dream.
“I have worked my whole life for this moment. I’m 40 years old. I started playing football professionally when I was 25, in 2012. I thought about leaving but I continued because of this dream,” he said.
He dedicated the man-of-the-match award to his teammates, stating, “This is for all of my teammates because without them nothing would be possible. I will continue to work for Cape Verde and for the people.”
Historic Achievement
With this draw, Cape Verde now have matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay remaining in Group H. A historic qualification to the knockout stages remains a possibility for the tournament debutants.
