Benni McCarthy Discloses Manchester United's Decision on Victor Osimhen
Former Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has publicly detailed the reasons behind the club's choice not to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. McCarthy, who served under manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, was actively involved in recruitment discussions for forwards and expressed that Osimhen was highly regarded as a potential target.
Osimhen's Rise and United's Interest
Victor Osimhen gained prominence as one of Europe's most coveted forwards after an outstanding 2022–23 season with Napoli, where he scored 26 Serie A goals. His performance was instrumental in helping Napoli secure their first Italian league title in 33 years, elevating his status in the football world. McCarthy emphasized that Osimhen was at the top of Manchester United's list for striker signings, believing he would have been an ideal fit for the team's playing style and needs.
The Africa Cup of Nations as a Major Hurdle
However, a significant obstacle emerged in the form of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). McCarthy explained that the biennial tournament, which often occurs during the European football season, raised serious concerns for the club. He stated, "If you spend £100 million on a player, you don't want to lose him for Afcon. Losing your main striker for so many important matches can hurt the team. It was a big stumbling block." This timing issue led Manchester United to reconsider their pursuit, with Osimhen's name eventually being removed from their shortlist due to the potential disruption his absence could cause.
United's Alternative and Osimhen's Subsequent Career
In response to this decision, Manchester United opted to sign Danish forward Rasmus Højlund from Atalanta BC in August 2023 for a fee of £72 million. Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen continued to excel in his career, winning the African Footballer of the Year award in 2023. After departing Napoli, he joined Galatasaray on loan in September 2024 before making a permanent move to the Turkish club in July of the following year. Osimhen later played a key role in Galatasaray's victory over Juventus in the UEFA Champions League playoffs, showcasing his enduring talent on the international stage.
McCarthy's insights shed light on the complex factors that influence high-stakes football transfers, highlighting how tournament schedules can impact club strategies and player acquisitions.
