CAF Clears Wilfred Ndidi for Nigeria vs DR Congo World Cup Playoff
Wilfred Ndidi Eligible for Nigeria vs DR Congo Final

In a significant development for Nigerian football fans, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed that midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to play in the crucial World Cup playoff final against DR Congo this Sunday.

Yellow Card Confusion Resolved

The Besiktas midfielder had initially been expected to miss the final after receiving his second yellow card of the World Cup qualifying series during Nigeria's semi-final victory over Gabon. Ndidi picked up the booking in the 6th minute of that match but demonstrated remarkable resilience by completing the entire 120 minutes and providing a brilliant assist for Chidera Ejuke.

However, in an official statement released by the Super Eagles, CAF clarified that cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs. Only confirmed suspensions from previous matches would affect player eligibility for the playoff final.

Coach Chelle's Relief and Praise

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle had earlier expressed concern about Ndidi's potential absence, describing him as an "important player for us" whose "experience, ability and leadership on the pitch are important for this team."

Chelle had prepared contingency plans, mentioning midfield alternatives Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka, and Yusuf Alhasan, but now welcomes the news that his vice-captain will be available. The former Leicester City star recently celebrated his 70th cap for the Nigerian national team and capped his performance against Gabon with a crucial assist.

Additional Squad Boost

The good news continues for the Super Eagles as defender Semi Ajayi also returns to the squad after serving a one-match suspension against Gabon. Ajayi had received his second yellow card of the group stage during Nigeria's match against Benin.

Coach Chelle's decision to include the experienced defender in anticipation of a second match has proven wise, and Ajayi is expected to feature against DR Congo.

The playoff represents Nigeria's pathway to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A victory against DR Congo on Sunday would see the Super Eagles advance to the intercontinental playoff in Mexico scheduled for March 2026.

CAF has acknowledged both Nigeria and DR Congo as finalists after their respective semi-final victories over Gabon and Cameroon, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter that will determine Africa's World Cup representative.
