Super Eagles Legend Issues Strong Warning to Football Federation
Former Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni has delivered a crucial message to the Nigeria Football Federation regarding their search for a new Super Eagles coach. The NFF is reportedly seeking a replacement for current manager Eric Chelle after the team's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Coaches Nigeria Must Avoid According to Yakubu
The Middlesbrough legend specifically warned against considering Augustine Eguavoen or Samson Siasia for the managerial position. Aiyegbeni expressed strong reservations about both coaches' ability to handle the current generation of Super Eagles players.
"For Nigeria changing coaches now with Eric Chelle, I think we should allow him to take the team to AFCON," Aiyegbeni stated. "It is too close to bring in another coach like Augustine Eguavoen or Samson Siasia. I don't think we need both coaches anymore. We have gone past that era to bring them."
The former Everton striker elaborated on his position regarding Eguavoen, noting that despite the coach having multiple opportunities with the national team, his record wasn't exceptional. "Eguavoen has been there for three or four times now. When you check his record, he did well but not a fantastic job. We should forget about him and look for who we can bring. We should be moving forward and not backward."
Vote of Confidence for Current Coach
Interestingly, the three-time AFCON bronze medallist actually passed a vote of confidence in current coach Eric Chelle. Since taking over from Finidi George, Chelle has recorded six victories, three draws, and only one defeat. He guided the team to a second-place finish in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification group behind South Africa.
However, Nigeria's World Cup dreams ended when they lost 4-3 to DR Congo in a penalty shootout during the World Cup playoff final. This failure has prompted the NFF to consider changes despite Chelle's relatively positive record.
Tribute to Late Coaching Legends
During his commentary, Yakubu Aiyegbeni took time to praise late coaches Amodu Shuaibu and Christian Chukwu, describing them as among Africa's best during their era. He particularly highlighted Shuaibu's collaborative approach with players.
"He (Amodu Shuaibu) is still one of the best African coaches. He listens to players and their opinions as well," Aiyegbeni recalled. "Many people disagree with me but I still believe Shuaibu was one of the best then. He handled the U23 and Super Eagles. Christian Chukwu was also okay too."
As Nigeria begins preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for December, the coaching decision becomes increasingly critical. The NFF faces pressure to make the right appointment that can harness the potential of Nigeria's current talented squad.
