Spain international Lamine Yamal has surpassed Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo's record in La Liga after FC Barcelona secured their 29th league title with a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in El Clasico on Sunday, May 10.
Barcelona's Title-Clinching Victory
In the 9th minute, Marcus Rashford scored a stunning free kick to give Barcelona an early lead. Nine minutes later, Ferran Torres doubled the advantage with a composed finish as Hansi Flick's side cruised to victory at Camp Nou. Both players celebrated by running toward Flick, who reportedly lost his father earlier in the week.
The Catalan giants have now won 11 consecutive league matches and opened up a commanding 14-point lead over Real Madrid, according to Al Jazeera.
Yamal Surpasses Ronaldo's La Liga Record
Lamine Yamal has now won three La Liga titles since breaking into Barcelona's first team at age 15 under Xavi Hernandez. The 18-year-old lifted the trophy in the 2022/23, 2024/25, and 2025/26 seasons, while Ronaldo won the title twice during his nine-year spell at Real Madrid (2011/12 and 2016/17).
Yamal has been one of Barcelona's standout players this season, scoring 16 league goals and providing 12 assists, per Sofa Score. Barcelona also won the Supercopa de Espana earlier in 2026, defeating Real Madrid 3-2.
Hansi Flick's El Clasico Milestone
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick became the first manager to win six of his first seven El Clasico matches, surpassing Pep Guardiola, who won five of his opening seven encounters. Barcelona are now level with Real Madrid in overall El Clasico victories, with both clubs recording 106 wins each alongside 52 draws.
Mixed Reactions to Yamal's Record
Fans reacted on social media. @mhidesticks said: "We all know he has a better league legacy than Ronaldo already. By the time he retires no one will remember Ronaldo cause he's going to surpass all of his records." @Saliu_ade wrote: "Ronaldo spent 9 years at Real Madrid. One of the greatest players to ever live. Two league titles. Yamal has been a senior player for three seasons. Three titles already." @IamBenson_G added: "So Lamine Yamal is now bigger than Cristiano Ronaldo in La Liga because he has more titles?"
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Ronaldo believes Yamal does not deserve to win the Ballon d'Or this year, stating that players from the UEFA Champions League-winning team, Paris Saint-Germain, should be frontrunners.
