Dutch winger Memphis Depay has publicly accused his former club, Corinthians, of failing to honour an alleged agreement to extend his contract until 2028. The 32-year-old forward, who joined the Brazilian outfit on a two-year deal in 2024, expressed his disappointment in a social media post, describing the club's behaviour as 'unacceptable'.
Depay's Social Media Statement
In his post, Depay, a Netherlands international, wrote: 'Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for two more years.' He added that the renewal was 'explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department'.
Depay stated that he 'always respected the club throughout the process' but is now 'forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests'. He warned that he will 'speak publicly' in the coming days and will not leave the 'unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned'.
Depay's Corinthians Record
During his time at Corinthians, Depay scored 20 goals in 79 appearances. He helped the club win the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil this year. He is now a free agent.
Corinthians' Financial Justification
Corinthians, who are currently seventh in Brazil's Serie A, cited financial reasons for their decision. In a statement, the Sao Paulo-based club said: 'It became clear that taking on a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution's sustainability.'
The club acknowledged that it was 'a difficult decision' but said it was 'undoubtedly necessary for the future of Corinthians'. The club also announced that their president, Osmar Stabile, would hold a press conference to address the decision.
