Somali Referee Omar Artan to Make History in UEFA Super Cup

Somali referee Omar Artan is set to make history on Wednesday, August 11, 2026, when he becomes the first non-European official to take charge of the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena. The 34-year-old was awarded the prestigious fixture by UEFA just days after being denied entry to the United States to officiate at the World Cup.

Travel Ban Disruption and FIFA's Response

Artan's exclusion from the US was linked to Somalia being one of 12 countries on a travel ban list introduced by the US administration last year. FIFA president Gianni Infantino indicated he had no authority to override the decision made by Donald Trump's administration.

Reflecting on the setback, Artan told UEFA in an interview: "It was a very tough period. A lot of people have sympathy for me because when someone has been working a lot of years and is supposed to do something, and then can’t do it, it’s very challenging. I really appreciate the support I received throughout the world, though; I’m so grateful."

Preparation and Match Readiness

In preparation for the Super Cup, Artan has officiated league matches in Somalia and the Kuwaiti Premier League. He emphasized his thorough approach to understanding the competing teams.

"We referees go through a lot of preparation in terms of getting to know the teams," he said in the same UEFA interview. "I always watch the teams play. I like watching European football anyway but, regardless, I go through and do a lot of research on the teams, how they play, learn their behaviours, tactics."

Supporting Officials and Historic Significance

Artan will be assisted by two fellow African officials: Liban Abdoulrazack Ahmed from Djibouti and Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe from Kenya. This marks a significant milestone for African officiating on one of European football's grandest stages.

The UEFA Super Cup pits the winners of the Champions League against the winners of the Europa League, and this year's clash between PSG and Aston Villa promises to be a thrilling encounter. Artan's appointment underscores the growing global reach of football officiating, even as geopolitical hurdles persist.
