Historic Ughelli Stadium Suffers Vandalism, Delta Sports Chairman Expresses Concern
The Delta State Sports Commission Chairman, Onoriode Oborevwori, has expressed profound shock and concern following the discovery of extensive vandalism at the Ughelli Stadium. This facility, originally constructed during the administration of former Governor James Ibori, holds historical significance as one of the four venues that hosted the prestigious 2006 Africa Women Championships (AWC).
Disturbing Findings During Facility Inspection Tour
During his comprehensive tour of sports facilities across Delta State on Thursday, Chairman Oborevwori visited the Ughelli Stadium and was confronted with what he described as a disturbing level of destruction. The inspection revealed that critical components of the stadium complex had been deliberately damaged or removed, raising serious questions about facility security and maintenance.
"What we have seen here is very disturbing," Oborevwori lamented during his assessment. "Public facilities meant for sports development have been vandalised, and there is clear evidence of encroachment on government land."
Specific Damage and Unauthorized Encroachment
The vandalism included the destruction of the stadium's 40KVA generator and the removal of window protectors, compromising both the functionality and security of the facility. Additionally, the chairman noted unlawful encroachment on stadium property, with individuals constructing various structures, including commercial stores, directly in front of the stadium complex.
This unauthorized development has significantly defaced the once-proud sporting venue, which previously served alongside the Oghara, Warri, and Oleh stadia during the 2006 continental championships.
Immediate Response and Investigation Ordered
In response to these alarming discoveries, Chairman Oborevwori has directed Mr. Omonigho Johnson, a staff member of the Delta State Sports Commission, to urgently prepare a comprehensive report detailing the current condition of the Ughelli Stadium and its facilities.
"We need a detailed report without delay so that decisive steps can be taken to protect and restore this stadium," Oborevwori stated emphatically, indicating that the findings would guide immediate intervention measures.
Contrasting Progress at Warri City Stadium Remodeling
Following the disheartening inspection at Ughelli, Chairman Oborevwori and his team visited the ongoing remodeling project at Warri City Stadium, where they observed markedly different conditions. The chairman applauded both the pace and quality of work being executed at this facility, which is currently undergoing significant renovation.
Engineer James Titus, representing the contracting firm Peculiar Consult, guided the chairman through the project site, explaining that construction activities were proceeding day and night to ensure timely completion. The project was awarded last year by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as part of the state's commitment to sports infrastructure development.
"We are working round the clock to ensure that the stadium is completed on schedule and in line with the required standards," Titus assured during the tour.

After completing his inspections, Chairman Oborevwori expressed optimism about the Warri City Stadium project while reaffirming the state government's dedication to sports infrastructure. "I am impressed with what I have seen here in Warri. The quality of work gives me confidence that this stadium will be delivered to standard and within the stipulated time."
The chairman emphasized that Governor Oborevwori remains firmly committed to the development, maintenance, and protection of sports infrastructure throughout Delta State. He stressed that standard and functional facilities are critical to talent development and the sustained growth of sports in the region, making the protection of existing assets like Ughelli Stadium equally important as new construction projects.
