Eric Chelle: Calvin Bassey Was AFCON 2025's Best Centre-Back
Chelle Names Calvin Bassey AFCON 2025's Best Defender

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has made a bold declaration, naming Calvin Bassey as the finest central defender at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations currently concluding in Morocco.

Chelle's High Praise for Defensive Rock

The Nigerian gaffer did not hold back in his admiration for the Fulham star during his pre-match press conference ahead of Nigeria's bronze medal match. Chelle highlighted Bassey's exceptional consistency and growth throughout the tournament, where he featured in every single one of the Super Eagles' matches.

His commanding performances were crucial to Nigeria recording three consecutive clean sheets during their campaign, solidifying the team's defensive structure. The coach noted that the 26-year-old improved with each outing, gradually evolving into a vocal leader on the pitch.

A Campaign Ended by Suspension

Despite his brilliant individual form, Bassey's AFCON journey concluded prematurely. He received his second yellow card of the competition during Nigeria's tense semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco, a match ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.

As a direct consequence of that booking, Bassey will be unavailable for selection when Nigeria faces Egypt in the third-place playoff this Saturday. The match is scheduled for the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, with a 5 p.m. Nigerian time kickoff.

A Personal Pact for Global Excellence

Coach Chelle revealed a personal understanding between himself and the defender, centered on relentless improvement. He constantly challenges Bassey to push his limits for both club and country.

"If I'm asked to name the best centre-back at this AFCON, I'll choose Calvin Bassey," Chelle stated emphatically. "We have an agreement that he must continue improving every time he plays, whether for Nigeria or Fulham."

The coach praised Bassey's professional attitude, emphasizing that his hard work extends far beyond match days. Chelle's ambitious goal is for the defender to rank among the world's absolute best by the end of the next club season.

"He works hard every day, not just on the pitch, and that's why he has become a leader in this team," Chelle added, encapsulating the defender's influence and dedication.
