Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed that success in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs will be the driving force behind Nigeria's quest for continental glory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Crucial World Cup Qualifiers in Morocco
The Nigerian national team is set to compete in the World Cup playoffs scheduled for Rabat, Morocco next week. The tournament features four African football powerhouses: Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Nigeria will face the Panthers of Gabon in their first semi-final match at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex on Thursday, November 13. A victory would see the Super Eagles advance to the final scheduled for November 16.
Coach Chelle's Two-Step Strategy
In an exclusive interview with CAFonline, Coach Chelle outlined his focused approach to the upcoming challenges. "Before AFCON, there's a crucial target: the World Cup play-offs. The goal is to win those matches, against Gabon on November 13 and, if successful, the final on November 16," Chelle stated.
The Malian-born tactician emphasized the importance of taking one step at a time. "If we win the first, we'll aim for the second, then turn to AFCON. We're working in parallel, but our mindset must first be on those immediate tests."
High Expectations and Team Unity
Chelle acknowledged the tremendous pressure that comes with coaching one of Africa's football giants. "When you coach Nigeria, you have to win everything. But we proceed with humility, with a smile and a will to work."
The coach expressed confidence in his squad's abilities, highlighting that team unity and motivation will be crucial factors in their success. "This team has great players. If we stay serious, motivated and united, nothing is impossible. If we arrive on the back of play-off success, stopping us will be difficult."
Chelle's comments underscore the importance of the World Cup playoffs as a springboard for Nigeria's AFCON ambitions, creating a scenario where success in one tournament could directly fuel achievement in the other.
