Christian Chukwu, who passed away in April 2025, captained Nigeria—then known as the Green Eagles—to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980. This historic victory cemented his legacy as a true pioneer of Nigerian football, setting a standard for future generations. His leadership on the field was instrumental in bringing home the nation's maiden continental trophy.
At the club level, Chukwu demonstrated exceptional skill and determination by leading Enugu Rangers to victory in the now-defunct African Cup Winners' Cup in 1977. The team triumphed over Cameroonian side Canon Yaoundé, showcasing his ability to excel in high-pressure international competitions.
Transition to Coaching and Continued Success

He was the first star to win the Africa Cup of Nations. An iconic player—I saw him play as a young boy. In that era, there were many great talents like Muda Lawal," Ikpeba recalled.
Ikpeba went on to acknowledge the wealth of talent that has graced the Super Eagles over the years. "In my era, there were so many chances—the 1994 team, the Olympic-winning team, and the 2013 AFCON-winning squad. More recently, players like Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen have also made their mark. There have been many great players to wear this jersey."
