Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has expressed his shock and disappointment after being omitted from England's squad for the upcoming World Cup. Manager Thomas Tuchel is set to announce his final 26-man squad on Friday, May 22, but Maguire will not be among the players traveling to the United States, Mexico, and Canada for the tournament.
According to reports, Tuchel made phone calls on Thursday to inform players who did not make the cut for the World Cup, where England will face Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in Group L. The 33-year-old Maguire, who has earned 66 caps for the senior England team, took to Instagram to share his feelings.
Maguire's Reaction
In his post, Maguire wrote: "I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer."
Season Performance
Maguire had been in contention for a spot in the squad due to his strong performances for Manchester United under manager Michael Carrick during the second half of the Premier League season. Since Carrick took charge in his first match on January 17, Maguire has missed only two league fixtures, playing the full 90 minutes in all other matches. His consistent form was instrumental in helping United secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season.
The decision to leave out the experienced defender has come as a surprise to many, given his recent resurgence at club level. However, Tuchel has opted to go with other defensive options for the tournament. Maguire's absence means England will be without one of their most capped players for the World Cup, which begins in June.
