Morocco to Host 2026 WAFCON After AFCON Appeal Win

Morocco Prepares to Host 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations Following AFCON Appeal Resolution

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RMFF) has officially declared that its attention is now firmly set on hosting the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). This announcement comes in the wake of a significant legal victory concerning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Appeal Board Overturns AFCON 2025 Final Result

In a landmark decision, the CAF Appeals Board has overturned Senegal's 1–0 on-field victory over Morocco in the AFCON 2025 final, which took place in Rabat on January 18. The board ruled that Senegal's walk-off in protest of a late penalty constituted a forfeiture under Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations.

This ruling reversed an earlier decision by CAF's Disciplinary Committee, which had dismissed Morocco's forfeiture claim against Senegal. The Moroccan FA emphasized in a statement released on Wednesday that the appeal was not intended to question the "sporting performance" of the final but rather to "demand respect for AFCON laws, integrity, and fairness."

Morocco's Renewed Confidence and Future Plans

With the appeal resolved, the federation expressed that Morocco now "looks forward with confidence" to hosting the 2026 WAFCON. Additionally, the nation is preparing to compete in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, marking a pivotal moment in its football history.

WAFCON 2026 Schedule Adjustments

The 2026 WAFCON, originally scheduled to run from March 17 to April 3 in Morocco, has been postponed to July 25. This delay is attributed to "unforeseen circumstances" and aims to ensure the smooth and successful execution of the tournament.

Defending Champions and Historical Context

In the previous edition of WAFCON, Nigeria's Super Falcons, the defending champions, secured a record-extending 10th title by defeating Morocco in the final. This historical context adds an extra layer of anticipation for the upcoming tournament, as Morocco seeks to build on its recent legal and organizational achievements.
