President Bola Tinubu's administration has delivered on its promise to the Super Eagles, with players now receiving national honours, houses, and plots of land as a reward for their performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. This fulfillment is expected to significantly boost the team's morale as they compete in the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Rewards Presented in Morocco Camp
The certificates for national honours, alongside documents for housing and land allocations, were presented to the players in their camp in Fes, Morocco. The presentation was made by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, just before the team's opening Group C match against Tanzania. These rewards were specifically pledged to the squad for their runner-up finish at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire.
A Major Morale Booster, Says Supporters Club
Vincent Okumagba, the chairman of the Unified Supporters Club, has hailed the government's action. Speaking to The Guardian from Morocco, Okumagba stated that this gesture will serve as a powerful incentive for the players and officials to give their absolute best in the quest for Nigeria's fourth AFCON title. He emphasized that seeing promises kept directly impacts the team's spirit and determination on the field.
Supporters Club Mobilizes for Maximum Support
Okumagba also detailed the mobilization efforts of the Nigerian supporters in Morocco. Members of the Unified Supporters Club arrived in batches on Monday and Tuesday, with more scheduled to arrive on Thursday, facilitated by the NSC.
"We have resolved to work together with the National Sports Commission to ensure the Super Eagles do well in Morocco," Okumagba affirmed. He explained that even for supporters who arrived later, local members in Morocco from cities like Casablanca have been mobilized to ensure a strong presence in the stadiums. The club is providing free tickets and t-shirts to create a unified and visible backing for the team.
Okumagba thanked the NSC leadership for supporting their travel and assured all Nigerians that the supporters are united under one umbrella, ready to sing and drum the Super Eagles to victory throughout the tournament.
