Tennista Foundation Aims for US Scholarships for Nigerian Tennis Talents

The Tennista Foundation Inc has announced ambitious plans to secure international opportunities for young Nigerian tennis players as the second edition of its Junior Tennis Tournament kicked off in Lagos on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The tournament, set to conclude on April 18, 2026, at the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja, has already captivated fans with intense competition among hundreds of participants across both male and female categories.

Forging Pathways to Academic and Athletic Success

During the opening ceremony, the President of the Foundation, Michael Nwoseh, emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader effort to elevate the standard of youth tennis in Nigeria while creating pathways for academic and athletic advancement abroad. "We are actively forging partnerships with schools in the USA to secure tennis scholarships at the collegiate level," Nwoseh stated. "Our collaboration with the American Business Council is crucial in helping these young athletes pursue their tennis and academic careers in the United States."

Nwoseh reflected on the success of the inaugural edition held last year at Rowe Pack in Yaba, noting the inclusion of a U-12 mini category alongside the existing U-16 divisions for boys and girls. "We are building on that foundation and are grateful to the management of Lagos Country Club for providing their venue to host this competition," he added.

Educational Grants and Corporate Support

The three-day event will culminate in a final on Saturday, where winners in both male and female categories will receive significant educational grants and equipment. "The winner will receive N150,000, a racket valued at $260, tennis balls, bags, and other items," Nwoseh explained. "The second-place winner will get N100,000 and similar gear. We are providing equal support to encourage female participation, as we currently have fewer women than men in the tournament."

As a non-profit organization, the Tennista Foundation is also seeking corporate sponsorship to sustain and expand this initiative. "While we operate as a non-profit, we aim to partner with sponsors to help these kids reach their full potential," Nwoseh stressed.

Aligning with Broader Economic Goals

Joy Lawal, the Strategic Project Lead at the American Business Council, Nigeria, highlighted how this initiative aligns with her organization's broader goals. "Part of our commitment is to inclusive economic development, and we see this platform as an opportunity for the younger generation to build discipline, gain exposure, and develop confidence," she said. "We are proud to partner with other sponsors and remain dedicated to initiatives focused on nurturing the next generation."

Commitment to Youth Development

Tunde Benson, Captain of the Tennis Section at Lagos Country Club, reiterated the club's commitment to youth development. "We have always supported tennis activities in Nigeria and are eager to back youth events," Benson noted. "Our club hosts various tournaments with youth competitors from around the world, showcasing the quality of our facilities. This collaboration is focused on developing youth tennis in Nigeria, and we are thrilled to see the talents on display."

The opening ceremony also featured appearances by David Edward, winner of the 2025 edition, and LKJ tennis coach Patrick Oshe, further underscoring the event's significance in promoting tennis excellence among Nigerian youth.
