Nigeria's Women's Cricket Team Secures Semifinal Spot with Dramatic Victory Over South Africa
In a stunning comeback at the ongoing NCF Women's T20I Invitational Tournament, Nigeria's women's cricket national team defeated South Africa in a nail-biting Super Over to advance to the semifinals. This victory marks a significant rebound from their earlier loss to Rwanda, reigniting hopes for the title in the competition, also known as the Patricia Kambarami Cup.
Nigeria's Resilient Performance After Early Setback
The Nigerian side entered the match with determination following a disappointing defeat to Rwanda on Tuesday at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos. Facing the highly rated South Africa Women's U-19 team, both squads were eager to restore confidence after previous losses. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat, but their innings got off to a disastrous start, with Ashley Bernard dismissed without scoring in the first over and Jeze Campher managing just one run.
By the end of the powerplay, South Africa struggled at 18 runs for three wickets. However, captain Mieke van Voorst anchored a recovery with a crucial knock of 69 runs off 47 balls, supported by Siphokuhle Masilela's 20 runs and Jae Leigh Filander's 16 runs. This effort helped South Africa post a competitive total of 133 for six in 20 overs.
Nigeria's Chase and Captain Lucky Piety's Heroics
Nigeria's chase began cautiously, with openers Amusa Kehinde and Christabel Chukuonye adopting a conservative approach. Amusa was dismissed for nine runs in the fourth over, leaving Nigeria at 13 runs. The innings progressed steadily, with Chukuonye scoring 26 runs off 43 balls before retiring out, and Eguakun Omosigho contributing 18 runs.
As pressure mounted, captain Lucky Piety delivered a match-winning performance, scoring a brilliant 66 runs off 35 balls, including a remarkable 24-run over, to force the game into a Super Over. In the decisive Super Over, Nigeria posted 10 runs and successfully restricted South Africa to nine, sealing a thrilling victory. Piety's outstanding display earned her the Player of the Match award, highlighting her pivotal role in Nigeria's success.
Other Tournament Highlights: Zimbabwe's Record-Breaking Win
In the second game of the day, Zimbabwe's U-19 side recorded a dominant 180-run victory over Ghana, setting a new tournament record with a total of 226 runs. Zimbabwe won the toss and chose to bat, with Beloved Biza delivering a sensational unbeaten 102 off 52 balls, well-supported by Lorraine Pemhiwa's 60 runs off 32 balls.
In response, Ghana struggled throughout their innings and were bowled out for just 45 runs in 18.3 overs. Salem Museka led Zimbabwe's bowling attack with four wickets for eight runs, while Biza capped her all-round performance with three wickets for 10 runs, earning the Player of the Match award.
