Sanwo-Olu Approves Inauguration of LOC for Maiden National Intermediate Games in Lagos 2026

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially sanctioned the establishment of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the first-ever National Intermediate Games, scheduled to be hosted in Lagos in 2026. This pivotal decision sets in motion the institutional framework necessary to organize Nigeria's premier dedicated transition tournament for athletes aged between 16 and 19 years old.

Bridging the Gap in Youth Sports Development

Conceived as a strategic bridge competition, the National Intermediate Games are designed to facilitate the transition of young athletes from grassroots levels to elite national platforms. The event will offer a structured and highly competitive environment for participants hailing from all 36 states of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory. Lagos State was selected as the host for this inaugural edition, leveraging its advanced sporting infrastructure and well-documented expertise in managing large-scale events, thereby reinforcing its status as a central hub for sporting excellence across the nation.

Leadership and Operational Framework of the LOC

To realize this ambitious vision and ensure the Games reflect the "Greater Lagos" initiative, the LOC will be co-chaired by a distinguished trio of leaders: Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos; Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development; and Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC). In operational terms, the committee will be responsible for coordinating all logistical, technical, and strategic aspects required to deliver a seamless and memorable sporting spectacle. This includes close collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), various national sports federations, and other key stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of organization, integrity, and athlete welfare.

Governor's Commitment and Vision for Youth Empowerment

Speaking on the significance of this development, Lekan Fatodu, whose leadership was instrumental in securing the hosting rights for Lagos, praised Governor Sanwo-Olu's proactive approach as a fundamental catalyst for advancing youth sports development. "Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has once again demonstrated that his commitment to the youth of this state and the nation is not merely rhetorical but deeply structural," Fatodu remarked. "By providing an unrivalled enabling environment and the robust political will to back our sporting initiatives, the governor has turned Lagos into a global laboratory for talent excellence. This initiative will serve as the vehicle to execute Mr Governor's vision of making sports a viable pathway for economic empowerment and national pride."

Fatodu further emphasized that the governor's consistent support has enabled the commission to thrive institutionally, ensuring that the 2026 intermediate games will feature state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure meeting international elite standards. At its core, the Games aim to address a critical gap in Nigeria's sports value chain, specifically targeting the "intermediate" phase where many promising young talents often fade due to a lack of structured competition.

Collaborative Efforts and National Impact

Highlighting the collaborative nature of the tournament, Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC, noted that choosing Lagos as the host for the inaugural edition was a deliberate acknowledgment of the state's proven track record in delivering impactful and large-scale sporting events. "There is a unique energy that Lagos brings to national assignments, and with this high-calibre LOC, we are confident the National Intermediate Games are in the best possible hands," Olopade stated. "We look forward to a synergy between the National Sports Commission and the Lagos State Sports Commission that sets a permanent gold standard for youth competitions in Africa."

This initiative marks a significant step forward in nurturing young athletic talent and promoting sports as a tool for national development, with Lagos poised to lead the way in setting new benchmarks for youth sports across the continent.
