National School Volleyball Championships Reach Climax in Lagos
The second National School Volleyball Championship has entered its decisive phase, with teams from across Nigeria intensifying their efforts to secure medal positions at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. Organized by the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) in collaboration with the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) and supported by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), this four-day tournament aims to develop young talent and select athletes for the International School Sport Federation (ISF) World School Volleyball Championship in China, scheduled from July 1 to 10.
States Competing for Honors
Nine states are vying for top honors in both boys' and girls' categories: Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Bayelsa, Adamawa, and Bauchi. A total of 28 teams are participating, comprising 18 boys' squads and 10 girls' squads. Hundreds of secondary school students have gathered at the venue, infusing the championship with vibrant energy and passion as they showcase their skills on the court.
Leadership Praise and Support
NSSF President Olabisi Joseph expressed excitement over the enthusiasm displayed by participating schools, emphasizing the federation's dedication to fostering a robust pipeline of volleyball talent through the educational system. She highlighted the significant support from NVBF, which ensures international standards are upheld and top officials oversee the proceedings.
"This collaborative relationship will produce quality athletes for the sport as well as good ambassadors of our nation," Joseph stated, while commending NVBF President Musa Nimrod and the Lagos State Sports Commission for their contributions.
Elevating the Competition
Kayode Ladele, Chairman of the Lagos State Volleyball Association, praised the initiative, noting that the partnership between NSSF and NVBF has elevated the competition's profile and reinforced Lagos's role as a premier host for successful sporting events. Additionally, NVBF Technical Adviser Martin Melandi affirmed that the federation's technical support will guarantee the selection of the best players to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
The championship is set to conclude tomorrow, marking the end of an event that not only promotes youth sports but also strengthens Nigeria's volleyball development framework.
