Urhobo College Triumphs in Thrilling Football Final
In an exciting display of youthful talent, Urhobo College from Uvwie, Warri, emerged as the champions of the 2025 Delta State/Zenith Bank Principals' Cup. The final match, held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba at the weekend, saw them defeat Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School from Warri South West with a 2-1 scoreline.
A Match of High Drama and Skill
The Uvwie boys started with a stunning goal just 37 seconds into the game, immediately putting their opponents on the back foot. They doubled their lead at the 30-minute mark, demonstrating superior control in the first half. However, Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School fought back valiantly, pulling a goal back midway through the second half. Despite intense late pressure from their rivals, the Urhobo College defense held firm to secure a historic victory and lift the prestigious trophy.
Celebrations and Commendations from Dignitaries
The victory was celebrated in the presence of high-profile dignitaries. Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who was represented by his Deputy, John Onyeme, praised all the participating schools for their impressive performances. He described every team as a champion, highlighting the spirit of sportsmanship. The Governor also commended Zenith Bank and the event organizers, HideaPlus Limited, for their continued investment in grassroots football development.
Emomotimi Guwor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, stated that the tournament's success reinforces Delta State's leading role in nurturing grassroots football talent across Nigeria.
Representing the Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, the Zonal Head, Dr. Ifeanyi Atamah, expressed the bank's pride in supporting youth development through sports. He added that several past participants of the tournament have gone on to build professional football careers.
The organizers, led by HideaPlus Managing Director, Tony Pemu, expressed their satisfaction with the smooth and successful conduct of the entire competition.
Rewards and Future Ambitions
For their championship win, Urhobo College was rewarded with an 18-seater Hummer bus and the sum of N2 million. The runners-up, Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School, received N1.5 million. In the third-place match played earlier, Otokutu Grammar School from Ughelli South lost 0-1 to Justice Peace and Success Academy from Aniocha South. The third and fourth-placed teams received N1 million and N500,000 respectively.
An elated Urhobo College coach, Adamu Ali, and the team captain shared their joy over the hard-fought victory. They promised to return even stronger to defend their title in the next edition of the tournament.
