Nigeria and Finland Seal Landmark Agreement on Digitalization and Innovation

In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, Nigeria and Finland have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on digitalization and innovation. The agreement was formalized in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, by Dr Bosun Tijani, Nigeria's Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and Mr Jarno Syrjälä, the Under-Secretary of State for International Trade at Finland's Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Strengthening Digital Collaboration Across Key Sectors

The newly inked pact is designed to establish a robust framework for collaboration in several critical areas. These include digital government initiatives, the development of emerging technologies, the enhancement of digital public infrastructure, and the strengthening of cybersecurity measures. Additionally, the agreement emphasizes fostering innovation ecosystems and building capacity through knowledge exchange and joint projects.

Dr Tijani, representing Nigeria, highlighted that this MoU reflects a shared ambition between the two nations. He stated that both countries aim to leverage digital transformation as a powerful driver for sustainable economic growth, efficient public service delivery, and inclusive innovation that benefits all sectors of society.

Building on Previous Engagements and Future Prospects

The minister noted that this agreement marks a significant next step following productive engagements held in Helsinki, Finland, in February. During those meetings, both parties met with key stakeholders, including Finnvera and Finnfund, and held in-depth discussions on advancing digital infrastructure, the Data Exchange Platform, and opportunities for Finnish participation in Nigeria's Project BRIDGE.

In his remarks, Mr Syrjälä expressed confidence that this partnership will unlock meaningful opportunities for both Nigeria and Finland. He emphasized that it will enable both countries to harness digital transformation as a catalyst for sustainable growth and shared prosperity, paving the way for mutual benefits in the global digital economy.

This MoU is expected to facilitate increased investment, technology transfer, and collaborative research, positioning both nations at the forefront of digital innovation and economic development.
