Nigeria Must Develop Ambitious Yet Responsible AI Program, Says Tech Executive
Nigeria stands at a critical juncture, poised to leverage technological advancement while navigating the intricate landscape of digital ethics. According to Oyebola Morakinyo, General Manager of Cavista Technologies, Africa's largest economy must focus on harnessing artificial intelligence for growth without marginalizing its citizens or compromising security.
Balancing AI Adoption with Human Potential
In an exclusive interview, Morakinyo addressed concerns that AI is displacing jobs, emphasizing that AI should be viewed as a multiplier of human potential. "Adoption must be ambitious, though responsible," he stated. For Cavista Technologies, this involves a three-pronged approach:
- Investing in capability development by upskilling teams to use AI tools strategically and ethically.
- Embedding AI into operations to enhance efficiency, customer experience, and data-driven decision-making.
- Implementing robust governance policies around data protection, transparency, and accountability to maintain trust.
Addressing Brain Drain Through Private Sector Initiatives
Morakinyo acknowledged the reality of brain drain but highlighted private sector efforts to retain critical skills. "We are giving them a voice, making them relevant, and building their confidence," he explained. Through initiatives like hackathons, Cavista demonstrates that Nigerian professionals can achieve global impact without leaving the country.
He also called for government support, including:
- Improved infrastructure and affordable internet connectivity.
- Modernizing schools with technology such as laptops and computer science laboratories.
- Partnerships with universities like Babcock University to align curricula with industry needs.
Fostering Innovation Through Youth Empowerment
Morakinyo emphasized the transformative impact of competitions like hackathons on students and the wider economy. "We want to build their confidence, equip them with tools and mentors, and refine their ideas," he said. These initiatives prepare talent with problem-solving mindsets, essential for Nigeria's technological advancement.
At Cavista, innovation is not confined to a department but is a daily mindset. The recent hackathon, themed 'From Data to Prevention, AI as Your Health Partner,' engaged 200 students in developing AI-driven solutions for preventive health challenges. While not all ideas may become products, they shape creative approaches to real-life issues.
Harnessing Youth Potential for Economic Growth
Morakinyo stressed that Nigeria's greatest resource is its people, particularly the youth, who constitute over 70% of the population under 30. "If we harness their energy, creativity, and potential with intention, we will unlock unprecedented opportunities," he asserted. By investing in young talent, Cavista aims to position Nigeria for a prosperous and sustainable future.
This hackathon marks the fourth edition by Cavista, with significant impact on fostering innovation and preparing the next generation of tech leaders. Through teaching and training initiatives, the company seeks to cultivate locally built and competitive innovations that address both Nigerian and African challenges.
